Scarborough Road

Sir, —Two steps could be taken to widen this road and make it less dangerous. The first should be the filling in of the deep channel on the left of traffic ascending to Taylor’s Mistake. A low dish channel sufficient to remove stormwater and yet not present a hazard to traffic is all that is required. The second step could be the building of parking areas on the right or seaward side of the road’s first section. These could be built on stilts (old railway lines might do), and would be less costly than blasting out parking bays from the rockface on the left-hand side Much of the road through the Manawatu gorge is supported on props. A similar scheme could be used to widen Scarborough road. —Yours, etc., C.H.B. December 29, 1965.
