Brigade Goes To Series Of Grass Fires

Christchurch firemen were kept busy by a series of grass and scrub fires during the north-west gale yesterday. At 1.37 p.m. one machine from Headquarters and one from St. Albans were called to a small grass fire on the roadside outside 62 Prestons road. The fire did no damage. About 20 minutes later another small grass fire broke out at 36 Russley road, a property occupied by Mr C. Tweedy. One machine from Headquarters and one from Sockburn went to the fire, Which did no damage.

About 25 new and used truck and tractor tyres stacked beside a wall at the Motorways tyre factory, Main South road, were slightly damaged by fire. One machine from Headquarters and one from Sockburn answered the call, received at 2.32 p.m. A grass and scrub fire on the New Brighton foreshore opposite Lonsdale street did no damage. Two machines from New Brighton and one from Headquarters answered the call at 2.54 p.m.

A fire on a vacant section in Tuawera terrace, Sumner, burnt grass and destroyed part of a macrocarpa hedge. The property is owned by Mrs T. Smith, of 2 Pages road. One machine from

Woolston and one from Sumner went to the fire. A fire yesterday morning burnt a considerable area of grass on railway land alongside the tracks opposite 93 Farquhars road, Styx. It did no damage. One machine from Headquarters and one from St. Albans answered the call, which was received at 7.31 a.m.

A fence at the rear of a house owned by Richard Vernal at 27 Barrie street was slightly damaged by fire about 4.50 p.m. One unit from Headquarters and one from Sydenham attended.

A spark from a rubbish fire ignited grass which in turn set fire to a paling fence at 74 Riccarton road. A unit from Headquarters and another from Sockbum answered the call, which was received at 6.54 p.m. The property is occupied by Robert Coumbardilis. About six feet of the fence was destroyed. No damage was caused by a small rubbish fire at 327 Ashgrove terrace, the property of David Russell, about 8.30 p.m. One engine from Headquarters and one from Sydenham attended. A wall and a wooden fireplace surround were slightly damaged in a fire at the house of John Ryder, 186 Waltham road. One unit from Headquarters and one from Sydenham answered the call at 9.15 p.m.
