Leading Swimmers Here

Some of New Zealand’s best swimmers and water polo players will compete in a swimming carnival at the Centennial Pool, Christchurch, on Saturday evening.

The New Zealand Universities’ team, chosen for a fourweek tour of Australia, will meet Canterbury in a series which, in some cases, will be a preview of the New Zealand championships next year.

Particular interest will be taken in the women’s backstroke clash between Miss J. Halsey (Canterbury) and Miss J. Kennedy (Otago). The women’s freestyle races should provide interest also. Miss A. McMillan (Canterbury) will be faced with a double challenge from Misses J. Clark and J. Durand.

The Universities have a strong men’s freestyle team. B. Crowder (Wellington) will meet A. Kindred and L. Furness over 440 yards, and J. Palmer (Wellington) will meet M. Hindle in the 110 yards event. M. Hay will contest the breaststroke against W. Brown, but the Universities’ backstrokers, W. Williamson and K. Thornton, are likely to be too strong for their Canterbury opponents. Both Canterbury and New Zealand Universities will play strong teams in the water polo. The teams are:—

Canterbury: B. Monk (captain), M. McGirr, L. Mclntosh, P. Hatchwell, A. McPhail, B. McNeilage, M. Scott, L. Scott R. Erickson.

Universities: I. Gunthorp (captain), B. Crowder, D. Kilpatrick, B. Spear, K. Thorn-

ton, C. Newth, W. William son.
