Correspondent In Saigon

SAIGON, Dec. 28.
A gang of Vietnamese slashed an N.Z.P.A. special correspondent, Mike Smith, with a broken bottle in Saigon early last night. He was taken to Saigon’s United States Navy hospital and discharged after receiving 34 stitches for severe facial lacerations. Smith was attacked outside the United Press International office. He is the third European to be assaulted in the area within a week. Smith said: “About 12 Vietnamese surrounded me. One jumped forward and swung a punch, but I dodged it and knocked him down. Then one of them hit me from behind with a broken bottle.”
The gang made off when journalists and American servicemen ran to Smith’s aid.
Last week, while driving from the New Zealand artillery battery’s Bien Hoa base to Saigon, Smith’s car was stoned in a village.
