RATIONING OF PETROL
Introduction In Rhodesia
(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright > SALISBURY, Dec. 28.
Rhodesia petrol and diesel fuel rationing today—the first hard blow felt by Rhodesians from international trade and economic sanctions.
The rationing order came 11 days after Britain imposed an oil embargo on Rhodesia on December 17. Some persons will be exempt from rationing—among them doctors, diplomats and disabled persons, as well as government bodies such as the railways, the Rhodesian Broadcasting Corporation, Central African Airways and the Central African Power Corporation. The Rhodesian Minister of Commerce and Industry (Mr Rudland) said the petrol rationing scheme was temporary and a first step towards full rationing. No coupons would be used and. in effect, petrol wholesalers and retainers would ration their own customers. Motor-cycles would be rationed to one gallor a week, light cars to three gallons a week, medium cars to four gallons and heavy cars to five gallons. The ration for commercial vehicles would range from five to 20 gallons a week, depending upon size.
