SUTCLIFFE FOILS BID FOR OUTRIGHT WIN
(Neto Zealand Press Association)
TAURANGA.
Set the task by Central Districts of scoring 234 runs for victory in little over 160 minutes, Northern Districts had some anxious moments in avoiding an outright defeat in the Plunket Shield match which ended at Tauranga yesterday. With five wickets
down for 56 runs at
one stage, and with W. J. Mitchell unable to bat, only a patient captain’s innings by I Sutcliffe, supported by the wicket-keeper, E. C. Petrie, saved the day for Northern.
Central, with a first innings lead of 69 runs, carried its overnight total of 15 for no wickets to 164 for eight wickets when M. F. Chapple declared the innings closed. There was a stage when Central’s chances of gaining an outright win looked bright, while B. E. Congdon (53) and B. L. Hampton (34) featured
in a fast-scoring opening stand of 66.
However, the innings slumped from 99 for two to 107 for six, forcing Chapple and I. R. Hampton to adopt a cautious approach. At lunch, the score was 130 for six.
The scoring rate in the last hour of play before lunch had fallen sharply and more time was lost when rain sent the players from the field. N. Puna again was the most successful Northern bowler, with three for 48 runs, giving him eight wickets in the match.
Heavy rain delayed the start of Northern’s second innings, and W. P. Bradbum and Sub eliffe had scored 30 runs in 33 minutes when tea was taken.
Pollard Strikes The first Northern wicket fell when B. W. Yuile had Bradbum caught, and with only one run added to the total, V. Pollard bowled G. V. Giles, who was top scorer with 64 in the first innings, for a duck, H. T. Schuster scored only one ran when he was bowled by Pollard, and the New Zealand test all-rounder soon after sent back B. Dunning and J. Bailey. At this stage Pollard had captured four wickets for six runs off 16 overs, including 14 maidens. His command of the situation can he measured by the fact that there were only three scoring shots off him during those 16 overs.
Five wickets down for 56 when Chapple claimed the extra half-hour, but Sutcliffe ;
and Petrie defended stubbornly to deny Central an outright victory. CENTRAL DISTRICTS First Innings ..232 Second Innings B. E. Congdon, b Kennedy S 3 B. L. Hampton, c Schuster, b Puna .. 34 M. J. F.
