RETIREMENT OF OFFICER

Long Service In Air Force

The Royal New Zealand Air Force officer whose responsibility it was to ensure the movement of the luggage of Royalty during three Royal visits to New Zealand has retired after 28 years’ service. He is Christchurch-born Squadron Leader J. H. Dunlop. His new job is on the staff of the reception branch of the Department of Internal Affairs, initially attached to the Royal Visit Office. Squadron Leader Dunlop, who became the staff officer of the Air Force’s movements organisation in 1956, has not only had the responsibility of caring for Royal luggage, but he has played a large part in the organisation of the movements within New Zealand of distinguished military visitors, including Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten.

His job included writing a letter to all the families of Air Force personnel leaving for overseas posts. Squadron Leader Dunlop estimates that he has written about 500 such letters, advising passengers of emplaning and documentation details for their flights.
