SJ. SCHOOLBOYS' CRICKET
THE third South Island x primary schoolboys’ cricket tournament will be held in Christchurch this season. It will run for five days, from January 24 to 29. The two previous tournaments have been held in Ashburton (last season) and Invercargill, in ■ the 1962-63 season. This tournament will be the most representative of any. There will be teams from South and North Canterbury, Ashburton, Central and North Otago, as well as Otago, Southland, Eastern Southland Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast-Buller and Canterbury. For the five days cricket, the 12 teams will probably be divided into three sections of four teams. These will meet each other once and the final two days will probably be devoted to playoffs.
The boys will play between 10.30 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. and two evenings* entertainment have been arranged for them. These will be on the Wednesday—probably a film and a talk from a cricketing personality—and the Friday evening, when trophies will be presented. There is a cup for the winning team, and prizes for the batsman with the highest aggregate over the week, and bowler taking the most wickets.
Mr C. G. Snook, president of the Junior Advisory Board, said the arrangements for the tournament were well in hand but the board was still having difficulty over billets. “The response has been good from some clubs and a few members of the public,” he said, “but we still need 30 of the 100 billets.”
