UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 22.
The General Assembly’s Main Political
Committee has adopted a draft resolution calling for the reunification of Korea as an independent and democratic country.
The resolution calls on the North Korean leaders to accept these United Nations goals and requested further United Nations efforts at conciliation.
Sixty-two countries voted for the draft, which was cosponsored by the United States, Britain, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines. Thailand and Turkey. Twelve countries, including all the Communist States, voted against and 29 abstained. The draft will now go to
the General Assembly for approval tonight. It reaffirms that the United Nations’ goals in Korea are “to bring about, by peaceful means, the establishment of a unified, independent and democratic Korea under a representative form of government, and the full restoration of peace and security in the area.” It calls on the “North Korean authorities” to accept these objectives and urges that continuing efforts be made to achieve them through the United Nations Commission for the Unification and Rehabilitation of Korea (U.N.C.U.R.K.).
