Extra Patrols To Watch Motorists

WELLINGTON, Dec. 22.
There was no room for “kid glove” methods in dealing with irresponsible and inconsiderate drivers over the holiday period, the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) said today.
Plain car patrols would be increased throughout the period and would “clamp down” on any instances of reckless or dangerous driving. Mr McAlpine asked for support for “Operation Safety,” the New Zealand-wide road safety campaign. “This year has been a
tragic one on the roads. The holiday period, with roads crowded with motorists, faces us and already more than 500 people have died as a result of road accidents.” The Minister said traffic authorities would be co-oper-ating and their main object would be the apprehension of irresponsible and inconsiderate drivers.
Throughout December and January the Transport Department would have its largest traffic force ever on the roads and instructions had gone out that all accidentpromoting breaches were to be “ticketed.”
