Noted Horticulturist Dies In Timaru
(N Z. Press Association) TIMARU, Dec. 21. One of New Zealand's bestknown authorities on horticulture. Mr George Edward Knowles, of Timaru, died on Sunday. He was 88. The son of George Du Rose Knowles, who came from England in 1875 as head gardener for Mr Arthur Perry, of “Beverley,” Timaru, Mr
Knowles was widely known throughout Australia and New Zealand as a former president and life member of Interflora (Pacific unit). He helped to found the Australian unit some years ago. Mr Knowles was patron of the New Zealand Chrysanthemum Society, an associate of honour in the Royal Institute of Horticulture, and the holder of a national diploma of horticulture. For almost half a century he was a judge at flower showers throughout the Dominion, travelling widely in many country districts to give encouragement and advice.
Mr Knowles was president and a life member of the Timaru Horticultural Society, of which he had been chairman or president since 1920. The nursery in Timaru, founded by his father in 1898, is still in the Knowles family. Mr Knowles’ son, Mr E. R. Knowles, now runs the nursery.
Messiah Trumpet Soloist.— In the performance of the “Messiah” given on Thursday and Saturday by the Royal Christchurch Musical Society, the trumpet solo was not played by Ralph Simpson, as stated in the printed programme, but by Stan Pbeloung.
