New Railway Hotel Sold By Ballins Industries

The New Railway Hotel, in Manchester street, has been sold by Ballins Industries, Ltd., for under £50,000. The building is on a site of 1 rood 20.4 perches, and the Government valuation is £41,800. The purchasers are to form a company, the New Railway Hotel, Ltd., to run the hotel. Stock and plant in the hotel are to be sold to the purchasers at valuation, and possession is to be given on March 27 next. The sale was made by George Anderson and Son. The chairman of directors of Ballins Industries, Ltd. (Mr N. W. Millner), asked about the sale last evening, said that the company had sold the Grand Hotel and the Shades Hotel, in the heart of the city.

"We are catering for the persons who are prepared to pay a high tariff with the United Service Hotel, on which we are spending £125,000, and the Clarendon Hotel, where a new wing will be built, containing single rooms with bathrooms adjoining.

“On the accommodation side, there is a tendency to build hotels in which the tariff is prohibitive for the bulk of the people. “In addition to Shirley Lodge in the suburbs, we have the Blenheim road Motor Inn, which we own in conjunction with New Zealand Breweries, Ltd. “This hotel is in the med-ium-tariff category, and is not only fully booked, but booked well ahead,” Mr Millner said. "The hotel that we intend to build near Pages road will also be in the med-ium-tariff category. We are awaiting final approval from the Licensing Control Commission for this 60-bed project. “These are our efforts to cater for the volume of trade, on the tariff side, rather than th exclusive trade.” Mr Millner said that his company still had the Woolston Hotel and the Bower Hotel. Ballins Industries, Ltd., this year had taken over Beilins Hotels, Ltd. t
