FELLOWSHIP OFFERED
Innovation By University
For the first time in New Zealand, the University of Canterbury next year will offer a visiting teacher’s fellowship to enable a secondary school teacher to become a member of the staff for a year.
The first fellowship, in chemistry, will be open to teachers throughout New Zealand. It will be awarded in consultation with the Direc-tor-General of Education, and the successful applicant may be granted leave with pay and in addition receive an emolument of £6OO from the university. A suitably-qualified teacher of sixth-form chemistry is sought, and the award will be made in time to be taken up next year.
The successful applicant will have some teaching duties with stage I classes and laboratory work, will be encouraged to associate with a research group, and may attend classes within the university. If the fellowship proves as successful as expected, it may be extended to other disciplines.
the vice-chancellor (Dr. L. L. Pownall) said yesterday that the fellowship could bring substantial benefits to the university, and the school system, and the Regional Superintendent of Education (Mr S. S. P. Hamilton) described the scheme as a most imaginative one that would be widely welcomed by feathers.
