CAUSE OF CRASH
Portuguese Inquiry (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LISBON. Dec. 21. Officials probing the cause of last night's headon collision between an express train and a freight train reported today that the freight train was on the wrong track. The collision occurred about 13 miles west of Lisbon.
At least 22 passengers in the first two carriages of the express laden with Christmas shoppers were killed in the crash—the third train crash in the Iberian Peninsula in three days. The death toll has not yet been accurately ascertained, but at least 22. including the drivers of both trains, were killed, and more than 30 injured. Thirty people were killed at Villar des los Alamos, in western Spain, on Saturday when the Paris-Barcelona express hit a local train.
Copper Ban.—The Australian Government last night announced a ban on the export of copper. The ban was imposed to conserve available supplies for Australian industry.—Canberra, December 21.
