THIS BASKING SHARK, 30ft long and weighing four tons, was harpooned by Mr R. Baxter at Kaikoura on Sunday afternoon. He catches them for their livers, which yield oil. This one yielded £50 worth (1000lb). Basking sharks are rarely seen so far south, but schools of up to 50 have been sighted off Kaikoura recently.
