Problem Of Charges

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. The Auckland Master Carriers’ Association and the Auckland Owner-Drivers* Association have asked the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) to consider setting up an independent investigation into wharf handling charges in the interest of all concerned. The two associations handle nearly all goods carted by road to and from the Auckland wharves.

A spokesman said that both associations felt strongly that if the parties concerned could not resolve the problem, the Government should suspend the changes, and, if necessary, require the parties to go to arbitration. “For years the associations have been pressing for an investigation of conditions on Auckland’s wharves, with little result,” said the spokesman. “The time is now overdue for a frank analysis of all wharf handling charges."
