ARTS COUNCIL MAKES AWARDS

WELLINGTON Dec. 20. Six Christchurch people figure in the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council’s awards for 1994. The chairman of the council (Mr G. G. G. Watson) yesterday announced the awards, which amount to £20,000. Miss KM Te Kanawa, this year’s winner of the Australian “Sun” Aria contest, has been awarded £2500 for three years study at the London Opera School. Potter James Cowan, of Wellington, was awarded £1250 for studies in ceramics in New Zealand. Mrs Evelyn Page, of Thorndon, a well-known portrait painter, will receive £250 for special study of painting in Europe. ,Mr Anthony Williams, of Eastbourne, director-camera-man of the film “Runaway,” will use his £lOOO award to study cinematography in Europe and America. Mr lan Mune, 24-yeer-old Wellington actor, was awarded £6OO to study acting at the New Zealand Theatre Centre. As well, he was awarded a £5O scholarship to attend short-term courses in professional training. Etcher Gary Tricker, of Taita, Lower Hutt, will receive £6OO to study etching techniques in New Zealand.
The following minor scholarships were awarded to Christchurch people:— £450 scholarship to complete the Diploma in Fine Arts in painting at the University of Canterbury: Maurice Angelo. £5O scholarships for short courses in professional drama
training: Cecily Polson, Caroline Wright, Dennis LUI and Donald Farr.
£9O scholarship for dally classes at approved ballet studios in New Zealand and away from home allowance of £210: Simon Garrett
