Trade Policy
Sir,—The disparity between the economic policy of this country and Eire is startling, although their economies are both based on farm produce to gain overseas exchange. We sign a free trade treaty with Australia while relying on Britain as our chief market, giving rise to acid comment by the British Manufacturers’ Federation for this and our harsh treatment of British goods. This underwriting of her export trade will give Eire a key advantage at our expense. Denmark also dependent on the British market, utterly rejects import controls, and fosters a two-way trade. In return, neither will be faced, as we are, with, having to find other markets. Our preference for restricted import -controlled trade will soon by badly shaken.—Yours, etc V. WILKINSON. Ashburton, December 20, 1965.
