CHESS CLUB GRANT
Explanation By Bank The remarks of Mr A. S. Hollander, - the president of the Canterbury Chess Club, regarding the failure of the Canterbury Savings Bank to make a grant to the club were both unfair and incorrect, said Mr E. S. F. Holland, the president of the bank's board of trustees, yesterday. “An approach was made *o the bank, but in our reply we advised that the conditions set out in the Trustee Savings Bank Act precluded such a grant being made,” Mr Holland said. The Canterbury Chess Club could In no way be interpreted as a welfare or cultural organisation, a necessary condition before a grant could be made, said Mr Holland. Mr Hollander, commenting on the financing of the forthcoming international chess townament organised by his club, said: “Both the Christchurch City Council and the bank have in the past made substantial grants to sports bodies for what, at any rate to the outsider, seem far less
important occasions.” Of this statement, Mr Holland said: “The bank has never made a grant, substantial or otherwise to any sporting organisation for any similar function. Mr Hollander would be well advised to be sure of his facts before making such statements." Much as the bank admired, and would like to support many worthwhile sporting and other clubs in Canterbury, it was bound by legislation to a limited field to which grants could be made, said Mr Holland.
