Mining Census

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. Builders and roadmakers used 17,500,000 cubic yards of sand, gravel, rock and clay during the 1963-64 production year, the deputy Government Statistician (Mr E. A. Harris) said today. Mr Harris said the first census of New Zealand’s mining and quarrying industry showed that it was worth £18,400,000 during 196364. The census revealed that there were 6520 people engaged in the industry, of which 3412 were mining coal, and 2647 were producing sand, gravel, rock and clay. The census was made as New Zealand’s contribution to the 1963 world programme of basic industrial statistics, sponsored by the United Nations.
