FRANK SMITH RESIGNS
50 Years With Bands
(■from Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, December 17. The board of control of the Tnnaru Municipal Band last evening accepted the resignation of the conductor (Mr Frank Smith). Mr Smith, bandmaster for the last 14 years, will carry on until a new appointment is made.
Assistant musical director of the National Band of New Zealand on its recent tour, Mr Smith, who comes from Mossley, Lancashire, has been associated with bands for 90 years. He was a cornetist at the age of eight, and his first conductorship was in Mossley. Mr Smith then conducted the oldest band in England, the Stalybridge Old Band (formed in 1812) near Ashton-under-Lyne, before joining Fairey’s Aviation Band as a conductor in July, 1937, when the band was first formed. He remained as conductor until 1951, when he came to New Zealand. Mr Smith, who has been a music judge since 1948, did an arrangement for the New Zealand National Band in 1962, “American Patrol,” and did a lot of arrangements for the 1965 band.
