Severe Fire Danger . Hot northerly winds during this week have made Crests in Canterbury tindry ,nd ereated the most severe fire danger conditions of this summer. The assistant conservator of forests (Mr B. Childs), who warned of the conditions on Thursday, said that the danger was most acute in the Eyrewell forest On Thursday thousands of tons of bone-dry debris still lying on the ground after last years windthrow at Eyrewell had become a severe fire risk. Considerable rain was needed to ease the situation, Mr Childs said.
A special fire crew equipped with radios is keeping a round-the-clock watch for any outbreaks at all major forests tn the province.
Logging contractors in the bush have been co-operating with the Forest Service by starting work early in the morning and finishing before mid-afternoon—when the fire risk is at its worst Mr Childs said most forest fires were man-made. He appealed for the greatest care by people anywhere near forest plantations.
