A punishing 109 not out by the wicket-keeper, B. A. Jarman, rescued South Australia from a mediocre score in the first day’s play of its Sheffield Shield game against New South Wales at Adelaide yesterday. South Australia Had lost five for 179 when Jarman came to the wicket. He reached his hundred in 133 minutes, with 12 fours and one six. South Australia ended the day 339 for seven. The legspinner, P. Philpott, who was in great form against England, was freely hit by Jarman and finished with no wicket for 66.
