AUCKLAND PRISON
Delay In Riot Damage Repair (N.Z. Press Association, 1 AUCKLAND, Dec. 17. The major job of demolishing parts of the north and east wings of Auckland Prison decided on after the July fire and riot may not be begun for some years. The task would be costly, Ministry of Works planners believe, and priority on Justice Department spending is to go to the new maximum security prison at Paremoremo.
“Our intention at the moment is merely to block off those parts of the wings to be demolished, and the engineers are still deciding how best that can be done," said a Ministry spokesman today. “We have received no instructions about demolition.” Re-roofing the prison and construction of the new es-cape-risk security wing will probably not be completed before early in the New Year. Several revised security measures have slowed down finishing work.
