Dominican Riots
(VZ Press Assn—Copyright) SANTO DOMINGO, Dec. 17. Communist-led mobs took control of a large business sector on the outskirts of Santo Domingo yesterday. Earlier rioters hurled garbage into roadside shops and sireets.
A United States Army spokesman said an American Army truck was burned by the rioters in the afternoon, but no American troops were injured. More than 100 American paratroopers were rushed into the area, but were later withdrawn after being heavily pelted with rocks and garbage by the mobs.
At one point the Americans used tear gas to disperse the crowds, but it only halted the rioting momentarily. As night fell, the rioters ran freely through a 40block area which had been blocked by hastily-erected barricades and garbage cans hurled from nearly houses.
