AUCKLAND OFFICER’S LONG AIR SERVICE
Wing Commander W. M. Golden, of Auckland, a wartime bomber pilot, airline and Air Force transport captain and administrator will retire soon. He was appointed assistant Air Member for personnel, Royal New Zealand Air Force Headquarters, in January, 1964. Wing Commander Golden began his flying career at Mangere in 1939 and joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force at the outbreak of the Second World War and served in the Pacific. He was awarded the Air Forte Cross. He served with No. 1 Squadron at Whenuapai and in the Pacific, and with No. 3 Squadron in the Solomon Islands.
After the war he joined the Union Airways, Ltd., and later the National Airways Corporation. He rejoined the RNZ.A.F in 1951 and served with the Royal Air Force No. 34 Commonwealth Squadron, taking part in the airlift of troops to Kenya during the Mau Mau uprising, and in the evacuation of British families from Egypt when King Farouk abdicated. He was a member of the Queen's flight on the New (Zealand Royal tour in 195366.
He has served as the officer in charge of the central area office, director of the Air Training Corps, and officer in charge of the administration wing at Whenuapai.
