Big Traverse Delayed

The second 1200-mile leg of a four-year traverse from the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station across Queen Maud Land to the Belgian Roi Baudouin base has still not begun. The ten scientists, led by Dr. E. E. Picciotto of the University of Brussels, are held at the starting point, the Pole of Inaccessibility, waiting for repairs to their vehicles to be completed. The group has been at the starting print carrying out maintenance on the vehicles since November 23. Last season’s party, on the first leg of the traverse, left their vehicles at the Pole of Inaccessibility. It is expected that the second leg will get under way in the next two days.
