(New Zealand Frets Association? AUCKLAND. The Auckland athletic centre has the East German athlete, Jurgen May, entered in the glamour mile race at the Rothmans international meeting at Western Springs Stadium on Wednesday night, but May wants to run in the 880 yards.

May said yesterday that he would definitely run in the 880 yards.

May was down to clash with Kipchoge Keino, whom he beat m the final 50 yards in the feature mile race in Wanganui on Saturday night, the Olympic 1500 metres bronze medallist J. L. Davies, Simo Vazic of Jugoslavia, and four of Auckland’s most promising young milers—D. Sirl, K. McDell. L Studd and C. Harvey.

May said yesterday that he would run the half-mile in an attempt to better the present German record for the distance of Imin 46.35ec.

The president of the Auckland centre, Mr R. W. Cheater, said that he had talked with May about his choice of events yesterday afternoon. Mr Cheater said that no final decision had been reached and he preferred to make no further conunent Yesterday morning Mr Cheater had said that as far as he was concerned. May was still running in the mile. The oversees athletes and their managers were given a cyclostyled programme of events that the athletes would be expected to compete in during their New Zealand tour, when they arrived in New Zeaind. he said.

“At this time 1 asked the athletes and managers if they were happy with the proposed racing programme and there were no objections,” said Mr Cheater. At the four international meetings held in New Z - tend so far May has run in two 880 yd and two one-mile events. A second clash between May and the great Kenyan, Keino, could see the world mile record broken. Keino also said after the race that he expected to run faster than his 3min 54.95ec second place time at the Auckland meeting.
