WINNER PROTESTS
Defeat Of Nikora
(N.Z. Pritt Aitociation) AUCKLAND. A protest that the referee, Mr R. LyaU, bad permitted the New Zealand champion, Earl Nikora, to take ton much punishment was made by the victor, the American Negro, Clarence James, after their bout at Carlaw Park last night. With only a few seconds of their Ibround bout to go. Nikora was beaten on a t.k.o. For a moment or two it looked as if Nikora would recover from a ttevastating left hook tn the jaw, but within seconds he was helpless against the ropes as James mercilessly thrashed in lefts and rights to the body and head.
“Nikora takes too much,” James said afterwards. "The referee should have stopped it much earlier. This was the kind of refereeing which causes fighters to get hurt.”
Mr Lyall ssid: “It seemed to me possible that Nikora would make a come-back. That’s why I allowed the bout to carry on.” After the fight Nikora was sent to hospital for examination for suspected fractured ribs.
On the same bill. Tuna Scanlan, of New Zealand, made a confident step along his come-back trail when he outboxed and outpunched Roberto Pena (Mexico) in their IG-round middle-weight bout.
Scanlan gained a unanimous paints decision, and won every round.
