Govt. Spending On Civil Defence

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Dec. 2.

The Auckland Regional Authority’s civil defence committee will investigate the amount of assistance overseas governments give towards civil defence spending. The Government is at present investigating assistance given by Commonwealth countries.

The committee will use information it obtains in presenting a case to the Government for financial contributions. It decided this today after considering a refusal by the Minister of Civil Defence (Mr Seath) at this stage to contribute towards the cost of communications equipment for the civil defence control centre at Epsom. Mr Seath said that, although the Government met considerable civil defence costs, present policy was for local bodies concerned to meet all costs involved in local civil defence plans. However, assistance given by other Commonwealth Gov-

ernments was being surveyed, he said.
