WIN AND LOSS

Fairlie In Semi-Final (N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY. New Zealand had a win and a loss in the Victorian tennis championships at Melbourne yesterday. The winner was the Auckland player, B. F. Fairlie. who reached the semi-finals of the junior championship. The loser was L. A. Gerrard.

Fairlie beat P. Dent, of Australia, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, in the quarter-finals.

His match with Dent t.as played on a porous court and this suited the New Zealander, who learned his tennis on hard courts. Gerrard was beaten in the third round of the men’s singles by J. Newcombe, the No. 3 Australian, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. 8-6. The match was unfinished on Wednesday, with Gerrard leading, 6-2, 6-1, when rain postponed play. Newcombe’s big service was a major factor in his win yesterday. Whereas on Wednesday Gerrard could return Newcombe’s best deliveries, yesterday he could not cope with the Sydney player’s heavy-weight serve on the inconsistent court.

The upset of the day was provided by the unseeded American. H. Fitzgibbon, who beat the No. 1 foreign seed. A. Ashe (United States), 6-2. 14-12, 9-7.
