OVERSTAYED PERMITS
Fijian Indians In N.Z.
| (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. ' There had been 15 convictions in the last fortnight against Fijian Indians who had remained in New Zealand beyond the length of their permits, Mr J. C. Larsen for the Immigration Department, told Mr M. B. Scully, S.M., today, The department, at the moment, he said, was looking for another 100 offenders. “It is, perhaps, for financial reasons that these peopla do overstay . . . and for this reason the department is looking for fines to be imposed.” The maximum penalty was three months’ gaol or a £lOO fine, but the recent fines appeared to range between £25 and £3O, he said. Hassan, son of Bubrati, a 22-year-old painter, today pleaded guilty to having overstayed his time permit. He was convicted, fined £25 and ordered to he kept in custody pending deportation.
