Mexican Irish
An informal alliance which linked Mexico with Ireland 118 years ago has been marked in Mexico City by a brief ceremony and a concert of Irish songs. During the 1847 MexicanUnited States war, about 100 Irishmen defected from the invading Americans and took up arms against them alongside the Mexicans. They claimed that they saw a parallel with the British occupation of Ireland. Half of them paid for their defection with their lives after American troops marched into the Mexican capital, while the rest were flogged, branded and drummed out of the American Army.
However, these survivors stayed to found many wellestablished Mexican families and, with later immigrants, to form a stalwart Irish comO’Donnels, O’Farrells, O’Gormans and O’Reillys still fill a few columns in the Mexico City telephone directory.
