Stimulus To Research
T’M firmly of the opinion A that research can only flourish if it is stimulated by frequent contact with students, and of course I regard myself and my colleague as students as well. We find that often the research is given an unsuspected impetus by some particular question raised by a student who is just trying to understand the field. Second, we feel that teaching becomes sterile if it is provided by people who are relying solely on second-hand information, It can only flourish in an atmosphere where the student feels that the teacher himself is desperately, passionately, concerned with the question which is being discussed and is making an effort to try to solve it himself. — Hans Kornberg, professor of biochemistry at the University of Leicester.
