RACING IN CANOES

Two Week-end Events Canoe racing will be featured at the week-end. Tomorrow a marathon race will be held on the Avon, from the Carlton bridge in Hagley Park to the New Brighton bridge, and on Monday there will be a four-a-side relay race between the Antigua street boatsheds and the Montreal street bridge. Tomorrow’s event has been organised by the RiccartonHorntoy Jaycees for the benefit of the Wharenui Amateur Swimming Club. Business firms, organisations and individuals have been invited to “purchase” a canoe with all advertising rights for £10; the money will be used to establish a fund to build a covered, heated learners’ pool in the Wharenui area. About 40 canoes will start in the event. The race will consist of two sections —twoman canoes and singles—with a massed start at 1.30 p.m. The first canoes are expected to reach the New Brighton bridge at about 4 p.m. The relay race on Monday will be contested by teams representing the N.Z.8.C., N.A.C., the “Christchurch Star" and “The Press.” Each of the four peddlers in the teams will cover one length of the sprint course with a female passenger, who Aril! change canoes at each change-over point.
