ACCESS TO GLACIERS

Better Service Wanted (From Our Own Reporter) HOKITIKA, November 5. “We have spent £sm on a road and have a new tourist hotel, but people cannot get to see the major attractions there—the glaciers,” said Mr M. Wallace (Westland County Council) to the South Island Local Bodies’ Association conference. He was supporting a remit, which the conference passed, that the Government be asked for a more thorough and detailed investigation of aerial access at the Franz Josef and the Fox glaciers. Mr E. A. Cook (Westland) said the glaciers had receded, but higher up there was a wonderful scenic and tourist attraction. However, many people could not get there. The idea of an aerial railway was not new. It was investigated a long time ago and thought necessary then, so surely today it was more necessary.

Shop Burgled.—The tobacconist shop of Mr V. P. O’Corinell, 398 Colombo street, was broken into on Thursday night and £64 worth of goods stolen. 7
