Choice Of Aircraft

Sir, —Much is being made by the B.A.C. 11l advocates of the fact that these aircraft

are being used by a few American airlines, but the facts are that no other aircraft of its type was offering when they were purchased. With the advent of the DC9 and the 737 short-haul jets, many B.A.C. 11l operators are already having second thoughts as to their wisdom in having rushed in, according to private advice received recently. Orders for the Douglas and Boeing products from airlines the world over have already outstripped the demand for the 111, even though the former aircraft are not yet in operation—a tribute to the reputation of their manufacturers, who have an unequalled record as producers of civil aircraft. What British manufacturer ever received a similar vote of confidence?— Yours, etc., AIRLINE USER. November 2, 1965.

Sir, —It is to be hoped that “The Press” can, as “Vee-Cee-Nought” suggests, give us a few well-informed articles on the balance-of-payments situation between New Zealand and Great Britain. May 1 also suggest that we get a few authentic reports on the B.A.C. Ill's in use from the Mohawk Airlines in the United States of America, who fly them over routes between 10 cities, including New York, Boston and Cleveland, as I understand, very satisfactorily. With all due respect to N.A.C.’s equipment selection committee, let the public have the true facts.—Yours, etc., WING SPAN. November 4 ,1965.
