Specialist Benefit
Sir,—The Minister of Health (Mr McKay) dashes hopes of a specialist medical benefit at present. This means a real hardship for old people, already hit by increased fees 'for general medical services Perhaps a new approach, on the “medicare” principle, could ensure a really free medical service for the aged. Lack of money is no excuse After all, the present benefit is being paid at pre-war rates, worth about 6s in the pound. With the saving on general services, the £1,000,000 needed for a specialist service could be provided, and still leave enough to pay 15s a visit for all over 65.—Yours, etc., - VARIAN J. WILSON. November 4, 1965.
