Planning For World Ploughing In 1967

Because many overseas visitors coming to the world ploughing championship, which will be held near Christchurch on May 12 and 13, 1967, would be travelling great distances it was planned to present this as an opportunity to see New Zealand, “the scenic gem of the Pacific,” as well as the ploughing championships, Mr C. N. Todd, chairman of the publicity committee for the contest, said yesterday. Mr Todd, the Canterbury Public Relations Officer is also executive sec-retary-co-ordinator for the contest.

Among methods of promoting the contest which were being looked into was an international ploughing queen contest, he said, and a world recipe contest involving possibly the use of Canterbury lamb with it, was hoped, as first prize a return trip to New Zealand for the winning farmer’s wife and her family and an all-expenses-paid tour of New Zealand. Arrangements would also be made for contestants and visitors to see during their stay in New Zealand sheep dogs in action, shearing and wool classing, and aerial topdressing, and it was also intended to arrange a hangi at which lamb and Stewart Island oysters would be served in traditional style. A mannequin parade to show woollen garments was also contemplated for wives of visitors.

It was hoped to send a newsletter at intervals to all ploughing associations and clubs throughout the world, Mr Todd said. It was also hoped to be able to promote the contest through stock and station agents in Australia and their counterparts in Europe and through travel commissioners and agents overseas. Already major international airlines had promised support in this way. Special publicity material, in particular a poster and various full colour brochures, was being planned. Committee Appointed A world ploughing contest committee has been appointed with Mr E. A. E. Fairhall, of

Blenheim as chairman and Mr A. L. Coleman, of Ladbrooks, as deputy-chairman. Other members of the committee are Messrs R. L. Brooker (Hawarden), J, G. Carter (Templeton), E. J. Croy (Ashburton), R. Middlewood (Darfield), C. E. Read (West Melton), W. Simpson (Oamaru), D. J. Stewart (Rakaia), P. G. Wilkinson (Wellington), and Todd. Members of the executive committee of the New Zealand Ploughing Association are exofficio members of the committee.

Chairmen of special committees are: finance, Mr T. F. Carter; publicity, Mr Todd; programme, Mr H. A. Magson; ceremonial, Mr Middlewood; grounds, Mr Coleman: and exhibition, Mr J. G. Carter.
