Greater Membership “Warranted”
The United Nations Association was specifically moulded to help citizens to exercise their rights of free thought and association, develop their personal understanding of what was involved in the work of the United Nations, and exert a continuing influence on their elected political representatives, and it warranted a much stronger membership than it had so far attracted, said the president of the Christchurch branch of the association (Mr A. G. Long) at the annual meeting of the branch.
“We should be thankful that the United Nations so evidently embodies the best interests of the peoples of the world that their representatives have striven to keep the organisation viable, rather than being ready to abandon it when the going became rough,” he said. Mr Long said it was opportune that the Dominion council of the association recommended branches throughout New Zealand to make special provision during 1966 for teaching about the United Nations, its capabilities, and potential. A report on the work of the U.N.I.C.E.F. committee was presented by the committee chairman (Mr D. A. Mason). He said that if the work of selling greeting cards in Christchurch was to continue capable assistance was badly needed. '
Sales of cards for Christchurch, Timaru, and Oamaru were more than 40,000, and 250 calendars were sold. Sales increased in Timaru but decreased in Christchurch, partly because of the lack of
helpers and also because of the increasing competition in the field of greeting-card manufacture.
Officers elected were, president, Mr A. G. Long; vicepresidents, the Rev. T. Cloher, Messrs D. Mason and H. G. Kilpatrick; secretary, Mr J. Strassmeyer; treasurer, Mr J. J. A. De Moor; executive council, Miss I. Young, Miss M. McLean, and Messrs D. Upton, M. D. Sadler, J. McCahon, P. Howard, G. Millar and N. Johnson.
