Threw Shot 60 Ft; Lost His Balance

(New Zealand Press Association; AUCKLAND. Les Mills (Western Suburbs) gave promise that he could be heading for his best season in athletics by his performance in the shotput event at the Auckland Centre’s scratch meeting at Grey Lynn park on Saturday.

Mills, now weighing 19 stone, powered the 161 b shot over 60ft for the first time in the history of New Zealand athletics, only to overbalance out the front of the circle and have the throw ruled out.

He opened the competition with 56ft lliin, and improved to 57ft s)in on his second try. His big throw came in the third round of the competition, but as the shot arched high and landed with a thud in the soft grass Mills over-

stepped the stop board. He said after the competition that a slight muscle pull in his right leg caused him to foul the throw. He had the chance of three more throws in the competition but declined. His New Zealand record set last February was 58ft 7jin.
