Boys Put Steel Hook On Line
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 1. Two boys charged with putting obstructions on a railway line near Avondale on August 31 appeared in the Children’s Court before Mr A. A. Coates, S.M,
A 10-year-old boy pleaded not guilty and the charge against him was adjourned for two weeks to allow witnesses to be called. The other boy, aged 13, pleaded guilty The boys were charged with placing a steel coupling hook and a steel spring on a railway line. Sergeant I. V. Edwards said the boys were on school holidays and on the way home from a trip had put bitumen and small stones on the railway line near a small station.
A train ran over the material and when they put more on the line a workman saw this and removed it. The boys then moved to beyond a level crossing. A steel coupling hook and a steel spring were found in a set of points. An approaching passenger train hit the obstruction. The Court placed the elder boy under the supervision of the child welfare officer for a year and ordered that £45 compensation be paid to the Railway Department.
