Mile Win By Inches
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) INGLEWOOD (California). Cardigan Bay, the nine-year-old New Zealand horse, held off Adios Vic in the straight to win the 15,000 dollars Stepping Stone Pace at Hollywood Park by inches on Saturday. The mile race was a tuneup for the 50,000 dollar American Pacing Classic, which will be run next week. Cardigan Bay’s time was a fast lmin 57 2-ssec.
Cardigan Bay finished second to Adios Vic when the three-year-old set a world mile-and-a-eixteenth record last week, but he led the strong seven-horse field all the way on Saturday. Stanley Dancer sent Cardigan Bay to the front in a brisk 29 3-ssec first quarter, slowed to reach the half-mile in lmin flat, then hustled him home in 57 2-ssec. Adios Vic was fifth at the three-quarter mark, but his driver, Jim Dennis, shot him through on the rail and he closed with every stride. Mr C. Song was a length back third.
Cardigan Bay was the fi/5 favourite. He has now beaten Adios Vic twice in three meetings thia year.
