Dark Intrigue All Way
“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. Dark Intrigue won his first race for the season and his third open handicap when he led from start to finish in the Whangarei Cup, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at Whangarei yesterday. With a furlong to go Dark Intrigue was about a length clear. He looked as though he would win. But over the last part he was all out to hold off
late challenges from Captain Lancaster and Town Guard. At the post Dark Intrigue was a neck in front of Captain Lancaster. There was three-parts of a length to Town Guard. Dark Intrigue, a five-year-old by Knight’s Romance from Kataban, the dam of Baraboo and Baloo, was having his fourth start for the season.
The other times he had been unplaced, but excellent gallqps meanwhile in training had brought him right back to his peak again. Last season. In the autumn. Dark Intrigue showed excellent form over the longer distance both in hack class and open company. He was successful at Whangarei and Rotorua in open company.
Computer completed a £ll7 14s 6d T.A.B. double when he won easily in the Powell Handicap, six furlongs. He dashed to the front with a furlong to run and won as he liked from Te Pari Chat.
Computer, a four-year-old by Messmate from Light Opera, was having his first start in open company, so his effort was all the more commendable. He was an outsider, in spite of his previous form, and paid £l6 3s and £4 ss. Results: HUKERENUI HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, £350: Urn —l/1 JOVIC (1) 10-5 G. A.
