U.N.I.C.E.F. Gains Nobel Peace Prize
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) OSLO, October 26. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (U.N.1.C.E.F.) today was awarded the 1965 Nobel Peace Prize for its work in trying to create conditions under which a new generation can grow up free from fear and hunger. Informed sources quoted by United Press International said this was the reason behind the award. No official reason was given. This will be given on December 10, anniversary of Swedish dynamite inventor, Dr. Alfred Nobel, when U.N.I.C.E.F. officials are expected in Islo for the traditional award ceremony in the presence of King Olav. The prize money is 282,000 Swedish crowns (about £18,000). U.N.I.C.E.F. aids the world’s hungry, sick, neglected and illiterate children, A.A.P.Reuter said. There were 31 candidates for this year’s prize, among them United Nations Secretary-General (U Thant) and an Italian social reformer, Danilo Dolci. U.N.I.C.E.F. is one of the most successful operations in the whole United Nations family of organisations. Cutting across ideological divisions, it has brought succour to millions of mothers and children in all parts of the world since it was created by the General Assembly in 1946, to assist war-devastated countries and raise the level of child health. The assembly revised the fund’s terms of reference four years later, shifting emphasis from emergency relief, to aid for continuing child
care programmes, particularly in underdeveloped countries. Today’s announcement indicated the award covered both forms of activity over the last 19 years. U.N.I.C.E.F. is financed not through the regular United Nations budget but by voluntary contributions from governments and individuals. A major source of income is the sale of Christmas greet- ' ings cards, designed by worldI ranking artists.
