LOST ‘ON PURPOSE’

Australian Suspended

<N.Z. Presa Assn.— Copyright) MELBOURNE.

An Australian tennis player, John Sharpe, has been suspended until January 31. This followed a complaint from the German Tennis Association that Sharpe had “deliberately lost a match” in Berlin.

It claimed that Sharpe had entered for two tournaments at the same time but dropped out of one because of an alleged foot injury. Twenty-four hours later, it said, he had won the doubles final of the other tournament. The Australian association refused to accept his explanation of a foot injury and suspended him from playing as an amateur until January 31.
