FROSTS CAUSE HEAVY FRUIT CROP LOSSES
(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, October 17. Marlborough fruit production this year would be cut by about 26,000 bushels by the heavy frosts of the last week, said the Department of Agriculture’s horticultural superintendent in Nelson (Mr M. G. Baumgart). Nelson had “no true damage.” At a meeting of the Nelson Fruit Advisory Committee on Friday, Mr V. G. Glennie, of Marlborough, reported that some growers in the Springlands and Faiirhalil areas had had 100 per cent losses in some fruits. He said the frost had hit in an erratic pattern. At Fairhall one grower who had started irrigating his stone fruit was unscathed but his neighbour suffered an 80
per cent loss. Mr Glennie said that the frost on the Thursday morning was estimated to be 16deg. The most critical period was yet to come, he said. The petal fall period, and the week following, was when the trees would be most susceptible, he said. Mr Baumgart said the blossom this year was about a week later than last year.
