Royal Portraits In Auckland Bank

'“The Press" Special Service

AUCKLAND, Oct. 17. Portraits of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh commissioned by the Auckland Savings Bank are hanging in the main banking section of the head office in Queen street.

The portraits, the work of ■ Sir William Hutchison ,a past ; president of the Royal ScotI tish Academy, have just arriv- ■ ed from England. I The president of the bank board of trustees (Mr K. N. Buttle) said that the original decision by the trustees to request sittings by Her Majesty and Prince Philip dated back two years and a half. Mr Buttle said the trustees were told by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters that it would be impossible for any painter to get sittings. • Rare Occurrence | “Sir Thomas Macdonald, the ■ New Zealand High Commis- : sioner in London, told us the commissioning of Royal port- | raits for a private institution ; was an extremely rare occurrence,” he said. The trustees were not easily dissuaded and a request for assistance was made to the Governor-General (Sir Bern-

ard Fergusson) early last year.

“Later that year we were pleased to learn that both the Queen and the Duke had consented to grant the necessary sittings,” said Mr Buttle. Garter Robes The Queen, in her portrait, is depicted in the Robes of the Garter and wearing the sash, star and chain of the order. She wears a diamond diadem, a pearl drop necklace and a frock of white lace. The background depicts Windsor Castle. The Duke is wearing the uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet, the Robes of the Garter being draped over the chair which stands behind him. The Duke's private study is the background. His hand rests on a Maori mere Which was borrowed from a private collection for the sitting. Both portraits are hung in frames which are more than 90 years old. "
