Men From Borneo Welcomed Home
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 17. The people of New Zealand deeply appreciated the vital role being played by their service units overseas, said the commander of the Northern Military District, Brigadier R. McK. Patterson, on Saturday.
He was welcoming home a detachment of 37 officers and men of the Ist Ranger Squadron, New Zealand Special Air Service, after an eight months’ tour of border patrolling with British ranger units in Borneo.
The men returned by Royal New Zealand Air Force Hercules with 23 naval officers and ratings, who were on coastal minesweeping duties. Brigadier Paterson said the rangers had played a strenuous part in helping to meet New Zealand’s growing military commitments in the Far East.
“Unfortunately, much of your story will have to remain untold but the people of New Zealand deeply appreciate the vital role you have played," he said. The detachment commander, Major B. T. A. Worsnop, said the type of training re-
ceived in New Zealand had suited the men admirably. “Our training methods are quite suitable for operational work in South-east Asia,” he said.
A replacement unit for the rangers flew to Borneo late in August.
