‘Obvious Site’ For Nuclear Station
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 17. The heavy demand for power in Auckland make the Kaipara district the obvious general location for New Zealand’s first nuclear power station, the Minister of Electricity (Mr Shand) had told farmers.
“South Head is only one of several possible sites which are under consideration,” Mr Shand says in a letter to the South Head branch of Federated Farmers. “At present two sites are being considered on the Kaipara Harbour and the possibility of sites being available on the east coast is not being ignored.” says the Minister. He says a start will be made soon on meteorological observations at the two Kaipara Harbour sites.
The farmers sought information two months ago on how the proposed station would affect farming land and how
transmission lines would affect aerial topdressing. Mr Shand has assured the farmers that there will be no more interference with farm land than is “absolutely necessary.” Some of the land might be reclaimed. All reasonable steps will be taken to place transmission lines in such a position that topdressing operations are not affected.” says Mr Shand.
